Gas Regulators: Single-stage Vs. Dual-stage

While there are many uses for gas pressure regulators, both in the home and in the industrial sector, pressure regulators are designed to provide the same function: maintain a steady outlet pressure despite fluctuations with the inlet pressure. Here’s a comparison of single-stage gas regulators with dual-stage gas regulators and how they work.

A single-stage regulator reduces pressure within a specific range in just one step. However, this type of regulator will show a slight variation in delivery pressure as the cylinder pressure decreases during use.

Because of this, single-stage regulators are preferred for uses where a constant outlet pressure is not crucial or in cases where an operator can monitor and readjust pressure or in another case, when inlet pressure remains stable.

While a dual-stage regulator provides a similar function in terms of reducing gas pressure, the main difference is that delivery pressure will not change as cylinder pressure decreases. This allows for increased accuracy in pressure control because the pressure reduction takes place in two steps. Operators will use dual-stage regulators for applications that require constant outlet pressure throughout the life of a gas cylinder.

Gas Regulators And Cylinders: 10 Safety Tips

  1. Always use safety glasses when installing and operating gas handling equipment.
  2. To ensure safety and to avoid contamination, regulators should be dedicated to one gas service only. Each new gas regulator should be labeled with its intended gas service (oxygen, for example).
  3. Cylinders or gas handling equipment should never be exposed to temperatures that exceed 125°F.
  4. A regulator should never be used as a shut-off valve. The gas stream should always be shut off at its source when it’s not being used.
  5. The gas cylinder valve and regulator connection should be kept clean and compatible with its intended service.
  6. Never reposition or detach the gas regulator when it is pressurized and/or in operation.
  7. Do not subject the regulator to an inlet pressure that’s greater than recommended.
  8. Gas cylinders should only be transported on carts that are specifically designed for cylinders.
  9. Never move a gas cylinder without its valve protection cap in place.
